隨著美國總統歐巴馬前往古巴展開歷史性的世紀破冰之旅，Airbnb、Google、喜達屋（Starwood）等美國企業也蓄勢待發，準備在古巴一展宏圖。
歐巴馬是在美國故總統柯立芝之後、88年來第一位出訪古巴的美國元首。於此同時，美國政府也批准民宿業者Airbnb在古巴接受非美國籍顧客訂房。
Airbnb在官網宣布，已獲得美國財政部核發執照，歡迎世界各地的旅客到該公司於古巴的4,000間房源落腳。雖然Airbnb一年前便在古巴開業，但先前只允許美國籍旅客使用其服務。
這也是歐巴馬政府推動逐步解除美國對古巴經濟制裁的最新舉動。由共和黨掌控的美國國會持續拒絕解除對古巴實施的禁運，但歐巴馬希望透過一系列漸進式、看似技術性的措施，開放古巴經濟，讓這個共產制度島國步向政治與經濟轉型。美國冷戰時期以來便對古巴實施經濟制裁。
歐巴馬受訪時宣布，字母公司（Alphabet）旗下的Google已準備提高古巴網路普及率、在當地建立更多WiFi與寬頻設施。國際飯店集團喜達屋也於19日宣布，已簽訂在古巴興建三家飯店的合約，成為1959年古巴革命以來首家進軍古巴的美國旅館業者。
古巴經濟長年陷入停滯，兼之政府監控嚴密，導致許多非法移民踏上90公里的險途，試圖從古巴跨海偷渡至美國佛州。
